UMass CESL promotes learning for life-long, engaged citizenship, partnering with communities on and off campus to work collectively for a more just society.

Welcome!

On September 1, 2011, two offices—the UMass campus-wide Community Service Learning office and the Community Engagement Program of Commonwealth Honors College—merged into one and began operating as UMass's still-to-be-named office of service-learning.   You've come to this webpage which is hosted for the time being by the honors college, but we have information for all UMass students and faculty.  UMass Amherst Civic Engagement and Service-Learning promotes learning for life-long, engaged citizenship, partnering with communities on and off campus to work collectively for a more just society.

We are here to connect learning and community service - to connect students, faculty and community organizations in relationships and collaborative work that promote learning and supports the goals and missions of community organizations.  Opportunities for students are built into academic service-learning courses.

UMass Amherst has a history of community service since its inception as a land grant institution in 1863 and has been designated by the Carnegie Foundation as a Community-Engaged University.
